Expatriate wondering

I find it curious how the american newslets handle issues. Here's a snippet from
USAtoday a couple weeks back:

"The household balance sheet is in good shape, better shape today ... but it's not improved for everybody. It's improved for the people in the top distribution of income and wealth," he says.

Sounds like the same old story about US. The rich get richer and the poor get poorer. This is how things work in the United States of America, the land of the greedy, right. And here are the actual figures for different percentiles:


Bottom 20% of families 100
Next 20% 400
Next 20% 500
Next 20% -300
Next 10% 2,100
Top 10% -20,300


I wonder how a newspaper looks at the findings above and says what they said: that rich get richer and poor get poorer. (Of which the latter part is definitely not true and first parts truthfulness here can be contested). The actual study can be found here.
