Warfare and civilians
Imagine at a time of war a soldier transporting supplies to fighting
forces, i.e. soldiers. How bad thing is it to kill a soldier transporting
the supplies, if you are fighting a war against the army he is serving?
Now what if the person transporting the supplies is not a soldier, but a
civilian? Does your answer to the question change? If it does change, if
it is worse (aka evil) to kill a civilian transporting supplies to
soldiers, then every fighting force fighting against good and decent
people should use civilians to transport supplies, because good and decent
people would not shoot civilians transporting the supplies.
What about supply depots, places where supplies are stored. If they are
located in a guarded separated territory controlled by the army and
surveilled by soldiers. Is it alright to destroy these supplies by
bombing? Is it wrong, if one is fighting a war against those people?
What then is the situation, if the people guarding the supplies are
civilians? Or does the situation change, if the supplies are stored in the
basements of multistore condos, where many civilian people live? Is it
worse, or evil to bomb an apartment building that is used as a supply
depot for army than to bomb a supply depot that is situated in a military
complex? Assuming the civilians know that their apartment building is used
as a military supply station? Assuming they don't?
If there is a difference and decent people should not do this in a state
of war, then everybody fighting against decent people is encouraged to
store all their munitions and supplies as close to the civilian population
and to do their utmost to force the conflict into where civilians are, or
to gain themselves the advantage of uninterrupted supply.
There are other reasons, why a military group might want to bring the war
to the areas where civilians will necessarily suffer and die, and they
deserve another post at another time.

Go Reuters, go ABC!
Afterwards somebody in the Reuters staff sends death threats to Charles Johnson, the author of LGF who pointed out the forgery. Reuters has told that they have suspended the person in question.
ps. the same person's photos about Qana disaster have been widely disseminated. The same person's photos of whom we were told that the ethics of photographers are so high that it is outrageous that anyone would even suggest that a professional photographer would go and doctor photos they take.
My suggestion: Make each professional digital camera have a secure chip with a unique public key/private key pair that is used to sign each photograph with the date and time of taking the photo, possibly a sequence number. This should be done so that nobody has access to reading or changing the private key from the card. Then whenever a photograph would be published, the publisher would also publish the original unaltered picture in a separate place where anyone could go and check that the photograph has not been tailored.

Qana disaster
I'm back - olen selkä
On the Lebanon hassle, I have a wish to make; a wish that probably is on the same category as the world peace that every Miss Something candidate has to wish in a live tv-show. My wish is that we would live in a world, where Hezbollah's actions would face more opposition and be condemned more loudly than those of Israel. That demonstrators around the world would show their opinion on Hezbollah's actions and that the worlds media would show that attacking your neighboring country without provocation cannot and will not be tolerated. I wish that bad people were held up to the same standards as good people are.
But I'm not a Miss contestant and I know that my wishes will not take root in this world. It doesn't stop me from wishing, though, nor trying.

More on Israel - Hezbollah war
If one wants to know more about the media campaign Hezbollah is waging, it is also useful to read this. And remember that Hezbollah fighters hide behind civilians - something that is considered a war crime and against the Geneva convention. Where is the international pressure to make Hezbollah stop doing that? Or hiding behind UN forces?
One may disagree with the strategy that Israel has chosen, if one thinks that the offensive cannot fulfill the hoped for results. But then one should also have a better idea in mind. I agree that the way the war is waged is not an ideal solution, it may turn out to be a bad solution to the problem of an enemy bombing the country with thousands of rockets and kidnapping soldiers, but I honestly do not know of a better one. I wish I did, though.
And those of you who wonder about the small number of casualties in Israeli side should know that they have had a long time to learn how to make sure every possible victim of a bombing or rocket strike survives. The theory is to get every patient to a hospital and under a surgeon's knife within 20 minutes of being wounded. Currently more than a thousand civilians in Israel have been wounded in the rocket strikes. In any other country, the number of dead would certainly be counted in the hundreds, not in dozens.
I spoke with an old fire department chief in California a little while ago (before the current crisis) and he said there's no way e.g. US rescue operations can do as good a job and same has to be said about Finland and other western countries.
I've heard some people complain that the Israel response has been too much, because so many more civilians in Lebanon have died than in Israel. If Israel had a worse medical response system and more Israel civilians had died, would the response then have been of the right size? Surely, the right response cannot be dependent on such things.

Sin City
I spent three nights in the Sin City (aka Las Vegas) and that was enough. Every place full of casinos - as if I didn't know that when I decided to go there - and every casino a maze. I had a great room for extremely cheap price. The bathroom was larger than most hotel rooms that I have slept in.
In this town everything is a cheap plastic imitation - almost. The heat was real, though. Daily temperatures were somewhere around 42-43 centigrade. And the thunderstorm, coincidentally, was also real. Yes, it does rain in the Sin City, perhaps once a year and I managed to get there at exactly the right time to witness it. Lightnings were cool, even though at first I thought they were just a part of another casino's outside show to attract more people.
To escape I spent yesterday looking at something that was definitely not a cheap plastic imitation of Grand Canyon. Though not the biggest canyon in the world, it was magnificient. It would have been good to make a trip to go down to the canyon instead of just seeing it from the ground above, but I didn't have the time, or could have had, but bungled my roll for choosing the right tour. Still seven hours was enough to know I want to see more, some other day. Water rafting down in the river should be cool.
Today (Wednesday) I drove all the way from the Sin City to Berkeley, 550 miles, 880 kilometers. It took about 9 hours and I spent about 40 minutes with another 2000 cars in the middle of Mojave desert (well outskirts, I guess) stopped dead on our tracks, because a car had crashed into the highway and blocked both lanes. Even I sweated a little bit.
Tomorrow I'll see more of Berkeley and meet some interesting research people. And lots of cool stuff for the weekend - I can't wait to get up to Napa Valley.

Western right to self defence one sided
Every now and again there are news of people who have used violence against another person in self defense. All these accounts use the typical language which gives right to self defense and use of violence very one sidedly. The courts of law only consider the party that was first aggravated to have right to self defense. This is awful and can never be accepted. After all, the other party in the conflict should also have a right to attack - in self defense.
We should immediately change our laws to recognize the right of the aggressor to defend himself from those he tries to hurt. Anything else is oppressive and hypocrite.

hyvin tehokkaasti toistensa ohi kansainvälisestä politiikasta puhuttaessa.
ei kuriteta tarvittaessa väkivallalla, he pääsevät tavoitteisiinsa, mistä
israelilaissotilaan.
Oikeiden ratkaisuiden löytäminen lähi-idän kaltaisissa kriiseissä on
äärimmäisen vaikeaa. Haukkojen ja kyyhkysten ajattelun eroa kuvaa se,
mikä on ensisijainen vaatimus, jonka ratkaisun pitää täyttää. Haukat
vaativat, ettei ratkaisu kannusta ihmisiä toistamaan pahoja tekoja.
Kyyhkyset taasen vaativat, ettei ratkaisu tuota lisää ihmisiä, jotka
vihaavat konfliktin toista osapuolta, ettei käytetty menetelmä surmaa
viattomia sivullisia.

Ihanaa.
Miksi seuraava täysikuu tulee vasta kun olen takaisin Suomessa?
Rummutus, tuli, tanssi, kauniit naiset, kauniit miehet, meri, rummutus,
korkeat rantakalliot, rummutus. Mainitsinko, että rummutus oli upeaa ja
vei mielen ja kehon mukanaan? Sitä olisi voinut seurata ikuisuuden vaipuen
transsiin ja antaen mielen tuntea rumpujen tuoman rytmien sointuvan
sekamelskan.
Setting the record straight
I found out that some people checking out my blog have made connecting
dots with my blogs name and ID aka Intelligent Design. I should sure wish
I am an Intelligent Designer in my work, but I do not believe in any kind
of supernatural. Not designer, or other creature responsible for this
wonderful ecosystem we have on our planet.
As most people like putting labels on people, I'll put some on myself. I
am popperian fallibilist, libertarian, rationalist, atheist. But as always
labels do not people, people define labels.

Sideways
Katsoin Sideways -elokuvan lentokoneessa. Toisellakin katsomiskerralla
miehestä, joista toinen on menossa naimisiin. Ennen häitä, parivaljakko
suuntaa San Diegosta Napa Valleyn viinialueelle nauttimaan hyvistä
viineistä ja viettämään viimeistä poikamiesretkeä.
Sideways on hidastempoinen draama, joka on rakennettu ikäänkuin
nautinnollinen humala - ja seuraavan aamun krapula. Elokuvan alussa
tunnelma on jäykkä ja vauhtiin päästään hitaasti. Sitten juhlat ovatkin
vauhdissa, eikä tulevan aamun krapulaan viittaavista varoitussignaaleista
jakseta piitata. Juhlat ovat parhaimmillaan ja nousuhumala tekee kaikesta
ihanaa.
ruumis on toipunut myrkytystilasta. Sideways johdattelee katsojan läpi
nousuhumalan, laskuhumala, krapulan ja krapulan jälkeisen melankolian
tunnemaailman läpi taitavasti ja huomaamattomasti. Tämän elokuvan voi
katsoa yhä uudestaan ja uudestaan.

Mitä eroa?
Kerrottakoon, että molemmat mielenosoitukset tapahtuvat latinalaisessa amerikassa. Molemmissa mielenosoittajat osoittavat mieltään presidenttiä vastaan. Molemmissa mielenosoittajia on yli sata tuhatta.

Matkalukemista
Minulla on tapana raahata kaikille matkoille iso kasa lukemista.
Lentokoneessa aika kuluu rattoisasti hyvän kirjan ääressä. Niinpä pakkasin
kasan kirjoja matkaan viime viikolla lähtiessäni. Tällä kertaa ehdin
lukemaan Yhdysvaltojen erikoisjoukoista (Special Forces) ja niiden
historiasta, Fair Tax bookin ja suurimman osan Waterloon uudesta
historiasta. Lukematta jäi mukaani ottama kirja Lontoon suuresta rutosta,
1665.
lopettaminen). Ne organisaatiot, jotka olisivat voineet auttaa
jälleenrakennuksessa tuhottiin ja monet niihin kuuluneet päätyivät
miehittäjää vastustaviin vastarintaliikkeisiin.
Fair tax book esitteli ideaa, jonka tavoitteena on lakkauttaa
liittovaltion tuloverotus ja korvata se myyntiverolla. Idean taakse on
vaikutuksista. Viimeksi, kun lakialoitteesta äänestettiin, 56 senaattoria
äänesti sen puolesta.
Waterloo, Waterloo. Napoleonin uusi yritys. Alessandro Barberon The
Battle, A New History of Waterloo, sai minut miettimään niitä syitä, jotka
saivat ihmiset seuraamaan Napoleonia. Vapaus, veljeys ja tasa-arvo.
Kuulostaa houkuttelevalta - ja niinhän se onkin. Valitettavasti
alkuperäinen vallankumous suistui olemattomilta raiteiltaan, eikä
Ranskasta tullut vapauden, tai tasa-arvon tyyssijaa. Silti nämä
valistusarvot tunkeutuivat jopa armeijaan ja Ranskan
tasavaltalaisarmeijassa huomattavasti suurempi osa upseereista sai arvonsa
Valistuksen aikakausi on kuitenkin jotain hyvin erityislaatuista
ihmiskunnan historiassa ja haluaisin ymmärtää paremmin niitä ajatuksia,
jotka tuona aika muokkasivat maailmaa, ja ihmisiä. Lukuehdotuksia otetaan
vastaan.
New York ja Lissabon
Palasin eilen illalla runsaan viikon mittaiselta työmatkalta. Kaksi
palatessaan.
Joku amerikkalainen virkailija unohti ilmeisesti ottaa minulta
No, nyt olen.
Parempi maailma on mahdollinen. Ehkäpä huomenna en ole näin väsynyt.

Why trademarks are different?
Trademarks are different from other immaterial monopoly rights that
government grants, because of their ultimate purpose is to prevent fraud,
not to prevent others from using an idea. Committing a fraud is to give
another person false information so that they would act in a way harmful
to their interests. By preventing me from selling jeans and claiming them
to be made by Levis, government does something good - it makes it less
profitable to harm people by leading them to bad actions. I should,
however, be allowed to make jeans that look alike, use the same sewing
techniques and same materials. But I should not falsely be entitled to
claim that they are made by Levis.
Thus, the trademark legislation may need change, but it should not be
completely abolished. The main purpose of government is to protect people
living on its lands from violence, theft, and fraud. This mission comes
from the fact that government holds monopoly over use of violence in its
territory and only that makes it possible to protect people from violence,
theft, and fraud. Government also takes on other duties, but none of them
can be considered as essential as those above, because at least in theory
it is possible for others to handle those duties. You may argue that not
in practice, but that is not relevant to what I say here, because the ones
impossible even in theory do take precedence over those that are possible
in theory (and maybe even in practice).
Thus, it is the duty of a government to create a society, which can reward
those who serve others well and punish those who would harm others.

Intellectual Monopoly Rights
Johan Norberg writes about intellectual monopoly rights in his blog.
The text of his makes me wonder, would he also have supported the
mercantilist system of giving monopoly for international trade of certain
items or trade routes? Would he consider that it was the right thing to
do, when the trade routes to Asia and America were being created - for a
limited period of time. To be fair, Norberg mostly speaks about copyrights
in his text, but the omission of patents gives the impression of them
being in the same category as copyrights, which he does not condemn.
The reason for asking is the patent laws. Patents are essentially
government granted trade monopolies for establishing a new trade route.
Not in the physical realm, but in the realm of ideas. And they work
exactly the same way as the mercantilist trade monopolies did. Once you
get the monopoly from government nobody else can trade there without your
permission. Not even if they travel there without any help from you or
your original trek.
I, as my readers may know, am opposed to the mercantilist trade monopolies
and see no difference between establishing new idea and establishing a new
trade route in an unknown world. The case for or against copyrights is a
lot murkier, but from liberal perspective, there should be no reason to
create and enforce government legislated monopolies, such as the trade
monopolies of past, or current patents.
