Guess what this is!

Today I post the first picture from my journey to San Diego and you are welcome to guess what this building is. I will only tell you that it is nearby to where I spend my time. Within a week I will post the answer telling what the heck this monster of a building is. It somehow reminds me of the time of the tripods, though it isn't one and I kinda liked it.

Matkakertomuksia

Asiat alkavat pikkuhiljaa sujua täällä San Diegossa.

Vahtikoira on syntynyt. Poliittisesti sitoutumaton blogi, jonka tehtävä on seurata poliitikkojen tekemisiä. Erinomainen idea, jonka tekemiseen itsekin voisin osallistua, mutten yritäkään ehtiä reissuni aikana. Vahtikoirassa kerrotaan mm. EFFIn jakamista Big Brother palkinnoista. Odotetusti mm. kulttuuriministeri Tanja Karpela pääsi palkinnoille sensuuria edistäneellä esto-ohjelmia kouluihin ja kirjastoihin ajamalla politiikallaan.

This is so much fun

I'm having so much fun being in here. Today morning, when I was strolling around in the university bookstore, I realized it. I truly am in California and I'm here, not as a tourist, but staying here for a while. I don't have to try to jump to see everything at once (even though, it probably means that I'll see in some ways less than I would were I here for two weeks as a tourist). It is so great to be able to get to know the place leisurely. And so great to do that in a country where I can actually understand what people are saying (the only other time I've been away for a longer period of time was to Japan and I don't speak any Japanese - the experience was very much different).

Lots of things to do, though, but my jetlag seems to be a little less bad than it was yesterday. Perhaps 8 hours of good sleep during the night had something to do with it. Sleep is good. Getting things done is good too. So next step: getting bank account and to rent a car.

It also seems that I forgot my mp3 player home and have to get another one. Luckily they are rather cheap nowadays and I've got my music with me.

San Diego, Kalifornia

Balboa Park 6:00 5. joulukuuta 2005

Eiliset lennot Helsingistä San Diegoon sujuivat hyvin.

Heathrow 10.26AM December 4th 2005

There is one thing about airports that I just can't understand. People most likely to use restaurant services at an airport terminal, are people who are on transit. In other words, they are coming from somewhere else and going somewhere else. Why the hell, do the restaurants serve breakfast until 11AM and then switch to lunch and so on. A passenger is most likely coming from different time zone and will be going to a different time zone. One would assume that restaurants would serve breakfast and/or lunch at whatever time the customers want them to. Why should for example I, whose inner clock is currently 12.30PM and going to California, where it is 2.30AM only be able to purchase breakfast at heathrow airport. I want my goddamned lunch, if I'm hungry and I've been up since 5.30AM.

On another note, last few days have been hectic and I haven't had time to write much. Here's a snippet of my schedule for past few days.

Friday: Get to work around 8.30AM and clean out the room. Go to Kamppi at 11.30AM for lunch with a friend whom I hadn't met for months. Get back to university to do some more cleaning, do some paper work and have a laboratory get together with sparkling wine 1PM (which I brought, bought and offered in celebration to my trip). Hear that the visa just arrived just before 1PM and after the wine, run to a bus and get back to Munkkiniemi and get the visa from post. Continue to Ruoholahti for a meeting 2.30PM. Leave meeting around 4PM, go back home, get dressed for choir little Christmas party which starts at Kruunuhaka around 5PM. Continue partying until 4AM.

Saturday: 12.30PM get up hungover. Throw people who stayed overnight out and start cleaning the room. Take a walk with a friend and start thinking about packing and doing last minute laundry. Around 5PM I go downtown to do some last minute shopping and have lunch. Meet some friends and chat with them too long. Go back to university to finish some things I hadn't time for after 7PM. Take a cab at 7.30PM to Munkkiniemi, throw some stuff home and get a towel and continue with the cab to Alter Ego sauna party at Ida. Arrive around 7.50PM. Chat with friends, go to sauna and say good byes to friends. Get back home around 10PM. Start packing and finish around 1AM.

Sunday: 5.30AM get up. Do some last minute packing with clothes that have dried just in time. 6.10AM call a cab to the airport. Arrive at the airport 6.40AM, go through check-in and security fast and find myself with lots of extra time, even though plane leaves 7.45AM. Try to sleep some in the plane, and find myself chatting with the person next to me – a graphical designer who lives in Munkkiniemi. 10.26AM GMT started writing for my blog, because the restaurant wouldn't serve me food and instead only offers breakfast. 10.45AM Here and now. Luckily they will start serving food in about fifteen minutes, so pretty soon I will be disappearing into oblivion.

I'm considering and probably will be buying a 1 hour, or 3 hour pass to the airport wireless network to pass the time. I just wish I knew some place to recharge my laptop; they just aren't designed for these kinds of trips. :(

I'm feeling tired, real tired. I've been doing so many things and still so little in the past few weeks. At least I've managed to say goodbyes to my friends. I never expected this moving thing to take so much time. I haven't really managed to do any real work for the past two weeks. Oh well, we did have the board meeting of the project, which required some doing from my part and then this. But it shouldn't really take this much time and I'm wondering who stole all the time I should have had.

I also, just as I was entering Heathrow, for the first time somehow realized that I'm going away. A part of me is sad, very sad, to leave all those wonderful people behind. As my sister can tell, a year ago I would have claimed such a thing to be impossible for me, or at the least very much improbable. I was the person who never really formed emotional attachments to other people. Or I thought I was. I have been such a person in the past and last spring I still thought I was. I thought that was part of my 'real' personality. That I would bond slowly and rarely. But last summer, when my father had an accident, I had a forewarning that things are not as they used to be. I was surprised by the emotional reaction I had then to a person I thought I had no emotional attachment at all. And I dare say, that had it happened a few years before, I probably wouldn't.

It is wonderful to be human and wonderful to have emotions. It is wonderful to feel sad because of leaving all my friends and wonderful to feel excited about the new life that awaits me. It is wonderful to feel anxious about how I am going to fare. Will I be able to accomplish things at the university as I would want to. Will I be able to find new friends and will I want to come back after all is said and done.

T-8 tonight we're going to party like it's 1699.

Kahdeksen päivää lähtöön. Kaksi mahdollista kämppää, joista voisi saada vuokrattua huoneen. Tänään läksiäisbileet Nelosessa, viinakaappi tyhjentynee kovasti. Kovalla kiireellä yrittää tavata mahdollisimman paljon kavereita ja ystäviä ennen lähtöä. Onneksi kiireisimmät asiat ovat alta pois, nyt ehtii hetken verran rauhoittumaan ennenkuin pakkauskiireet iskevät.

T miinus yksitoista

Yksitoista päivää ennen lähtöä. Lennot varattu, lähtö sunnuntaina 4. joulukuuta klo 7.45. Matkasuunnitelma melkein kirjoitettu. Professorin allekirjoitus puuttuu. Paniikki, paniikki. Trallalaa.

Ensimmäinen tuttu San Diegossa bongattu. Tim, työkaveri SSH-ajoilta on siellä ilmeisesti Nokialla töissä. Ainakin yksi tuttu naama pitäisi kaupungista löytyä.

T minus fourteen

Fourteen days left.

Yesterday I was too busy to write. I went to choir practice from 9am to 3.30pm. After that we had a quartet examination for Sulasol perusmerkki (basic level quartet singer). Had one beer with all eight of us that attended to the examination (and Eki and Maria). Went to Osakunta to sing a few songs at Karjalaisen osakunnan praasniekat. Had some sparkling wine and sang some more. Got back home and went to bed tired but happy.

Today I'm leaving to bake some and then we have a concert at 6pm in the crypt of the Helsingin Tuomiokirkko and then to the after party. And I still have some work to do before tomorrow noon. Embassy interview is tomorrow morning 9.05, so can't continue after party for too long. Hope I have everything done and ready.

Tired and busy

I'm dead tired. Lots to do this weekend, not only lots of choir, but also a presentation of a conference paper and some project related stuff that needs to be accomplished this weekend. I don't know how I'll manage. Hopefully I get some sleep and can make it to the after party of our choir concert. Hopefully I don't fall asleep there.

I hate needing to sleep, why couldn't somebody fix it?

T minus sixteen

Tired. Dead tired. Yesterday was a long day after a row of nights with a little bit too little sleep. This night I think I got about 8 hours, which was great, but not nearly enough. So dead tired is todays word. And I won't be getting really good night sleep tomorrow or day after tomorrow (no, not the movie, but Sunday) either.

On a bright note, volleyball is today. And today choir singing, tomorrow choir singing and on Sunday - a concert.

torstaina, marraskuuta 17, 2005

T minus seventeen days

Seventeen days. Time is running out and I still have so much to do. I just got back from Stockholm having flown there this morning. Did my presentation and it ended up good. The crowd liked and had lots of questions DURING presentation. It's so much fun talking to crowd like that. I even thought it went well myself, which is rather amazing.

Several things to do before Monday and the interview at the US embassy. I need to find a computer that can print directly from Adobe Acrobat to fill out the forms. Oh, the joy of trying to find a computer with actually working Acrobat + printer combo. Oh, the joy of working in the one place where these things are not to be taken for granted.

In Finnish we have this saying "Suutarin lapsilla ei ole kenkiä".

Early morning catches the

Got up at 5.15am. Had a shower, breakfast and finished my presentation. Now time to get out and to the airport. Stockholm awaits. I feel kind of funny traveling to another country and getting back home during the same day. It isn't something that should be happening, or so my brain tries to tell me.

Psyche of Id

Whilst supposedly preparing presentation, I learned a few things about myself. Or more like put together a few pieces of a puzzle I've known for a long time. Today, I decided to stay at home and work on my presentation to save the half an hour it takes me to get to work. A busy day today.

When I went out for a lunch I was feeling sad, or perhaps melancholy. It's not really such a bad feeling, it just makes me want to wallow in the feeling and do nothing else. Earlier, this is pretty much what I would have called autumn depression. Autumn, it is still autumn here even though it's already mid November and yesterday we had a big storm. Going out for a walk in Ruoholahti with Iiro was definitely worth it, even though I didn't have the right clothing for such extreme sport.

So going about my lunch business, I was melancholic and I noticed that the feelings actually comes from not moving around enough. Stretching myself, walking about a little in the fresh outdoors made me feel much better. So I'll have to remember to go down to the gym, or a walk even on days I work from home. Makes me feel much better.

On a side note, still have much to do to finish the presentation. So back to work it is with a brighter mind.

Busy - sort of

I should be preparing a presentation for tomorrow. An important one at that. But instead I find myself staring at a blank wall, reading my email box for a thousand and a second time and writing to my blog.

Being outsider

One of the most persisting constants in my life has been a feeling of being an outsider. I never really had friends, or a group with which to do things before getting to university. And even in university I found it rather difficult to connect, to find people who would want to spend time with me and with whom I'd want to spend time with.

Nowadays I rarely get that feeling after all I do have quite a few good friends and know many, many people. But sometimes things happen, which make one relive those feelings of inadequacy and of being disliked. In the circle of people I know and hang out with, the problem seems especially made harder due to a few things. First of all, I used to be rather inept at social situations and did spend a few years being rather unpleasant person. Combined with my problem with facial expressions which disturbs some people, every now and then I find out that there are people out there in the circles I frequent whom I don't know, but who seem to know me and want nothing to do with me.

Since being disliked by everyone was the story of my life for the first 20 years, it's rather hard to relive those feelings when I run into a problem where people dislike me and I have no idea why. Luckily it doesn't happen often, but even once is a bit too often for me. I know it is my problem. Other people are quite free to dislike me and I don't presume to know why they do that. It is not my position that they shouldn't either, though I think they might be wrong on who those people believe me to be. The feelings are my feelings and I need to deal with them, but I do wish that people who dislike me and don't want to have anything to do with me, would come forward and say that to me directly. I think it would be a nice thing to do and it would make me appreciate them quite a bit more.

It hurt me, when I couldn't join an rpg game, because another anonymous player did not want to play with me. It hurts me, when a close relative of mine has decided that there is something irreparably wrong with me and it is no use trying to know me. It hurt me, when many, people I know and care about put up their own irc-channel and then removed themselves from those channels I used to see them in and did not invite me to join. I understand their reasons for not staying, things were getting ugly in the old channel (though I do not think I was one of those to blame - if I was, please tell me so that I may learn something from it). I can't speak for those people, but I guess and believe that they had good reasons for getting out - and that they had good reasons for not inviting me. But it still hurts, especially as the feelings of inadequacy and of being somebody whom no one would want to know resurfaced as a result. Feeling of being shut out. The feeling is mine and comes from my own insecurities and thus the responsibility is not theirs, but mine.

To be truthful, I never really knew many of those people. Partly the hurt feelings, I think, come from the fact that they were people I wanted to know and people whom I thought I would get to know now that I had actually gotten to a phase in my life when I was capable of getting to know people. And believing I had a place in that crowd. In my insecurity, though, I never really believe it.

Päivän luku 21.

Lähtöön on 21 päivää aikaa. Vieläkään ei oikein tajua että on lähdössä. Tänään oli läksiäispäivällinen perheen kanssa. Hyvää ruokaa ja mukava ilta perheen kanssa. Voin suositella Piccolo Mondoa ravintolana.

Boikotoin Sonya

Sonyn rootkit-juttujen tultua pinnalle päätin ryhtyä boikotoimaan Sonya. Lisätietoa aiheesta muunmuassa täältä, täältä ja täältä. Liittykää tekin mukaan boikottiin JA kertokaa Sonylle päätöksestänne.

Itse lähetin seuraavan viestin Suomen Sonylle ilmoittaen asiakassuhteemme purkautumisesta. Kerron täällä lisää aiheesta, jos he vaivautuvat vastaamaan viestiini.

Arvoisa Sonyn Suomen edustaja.

Olen pitkään ollut Sonyn kiitollinen asiakas. Omistan Sonyn tekemän
kannettavan tietokoneen, kameran, mp3-soittimen ja olen kuluttanut Sonyn
tuottamaa musiikkia ja elokuvia vuosien varrella runsaasti. Tuottamanne
tarpeisiin, joita minulla on.

asiakkaanne. En tule siis omista tuloistani kantamaan enää senttiäkään
Sonylle, vaan asioin tästä lähin muiden yritysten kanssa. Syy tähän on
Sonyn suhtautuminen kuluttajan oikeuksiin tekijänoikeusasioissa.
Erityisesti SonyBMG:n harjoittamaan lobbaukseen tekijänoikeuslain kohdalla
ja Sonyn harjoittamaan haittaohjelmistojen levittämiseen 2. sukupolven
suojauksien.

tultua julki.

In an interview with NPR late last week, Sony BMG's Global Digital
Business President Thomas Hesse downplayed the recent DRM fiasco saying he
objected to terms such as malware, spyware and rootkit. "Most people, I
think, don't even know what a rootkit is, so why should they care about
it?" he said.
http://www.betanews.com/article/Sony_President_Rootkit_of_No_Concern/1131475197

Sony on pettänyt minun luottamukseni asiakkaana niin monella tavallla,
etten voi enää ostaa tuotteitanne. Olette siis menettäneet yhden
pitkäaikaisista asiakkaistanne ja tulen suosittelemaan samaa kaikille
ystävilleni, jotka harkitsevat tuotteidenne ostamista.

Kunnioittavin terveisin,

Mikko Särelä

Oil price fixing

This time another thing that people tend to forget. Oil pricing and price hikes in the face of Katrina caused people to wish for government to step in and to put a cap on the prices. Many arguments against this have been made - mine adds one that I have not seen before elsewhere.

The hurricane season was with us this year, it will be with us next year, and the one after that and so on. Each year Gulf of Mexico may see hurricane as bad as Katrina which may cause disruption to the oil refining industry.

If prices are allowed to fluctuate freely in the face of this disaster, companies and people will have confidence in the government not to meddle in the prices when the disaster strikes the next time. This allows people or companies to better prepare for that possibility. Some companies might decide to buy extra reserves for the hurricane season in order to sell the gas at a profit, if a bad thing happens. They are taking a risk, spending money to build gasoline reserves to gain a benefit, if the risk of a bad hurricane happens. These actions by companies and individual people increase the amount of gasoline in the market and thus mean smaller price hikes in the future.

Thus, for the benefit of the future, the right solution was not to commit to price fixing, but instead commit to allowing price mechanism to do its job.

Uutispäivä tuo, uutispäivä vie

Tällä kertaa kuulen Hesarista tutun kaverin suunnitelmista. Jimmy Wales nimittäin suunnittelee Wikipedian julkaisemista kirjaformaatissa.

Ihan hauska idea.

Nih.

Serenity

It seems that Serenity won't be coming to theaters in Finland. A shame, though I would not have been here to see it anyway. Some of my friends are planning on making a trip to Tallinn to see it. I would too, were I to stay. I hope I'll be able to find a movie theater in San Diego that still plays it - I'm not too hopeful though. It had its premier at the end of September (I think) and it'll take a month before I'm in San Diego.

I'm still thinking what to do about Serenity. I'm currently boicotting copy protected material, so I don't want to buy the dvd. I can't get into the theater to see it and I won't download it from the net, because that would be so wrong to Joss Whedon and the actors. I'll have to think whether I allow myself to rent movies, or not - that might solve the problem.

Note to myself: I have to start finding necessary links for surviving in San Diego area. At least movie theaters, route planners, apartment rental places, local news paper, etc. Suggestions on other resources that I need links to appreciated. Also other ideas how to prepare for living abroad (never done that before) truly appreciated.

Misconceptions

Today I would like to correct one mistake about economy that is cited quite often. It is what I call "too much competition" fallacy. The argument runs that the competition is driving prices too low and is thus preventing companies from innovating and creating new technology and is thus hindering growth. The latest sighting I have of this monster is talking about broadband market in Finland.

The argument runs that the companies are competing so hard that they don't have enough money to spend on new technology and thus too much competition hinders growth.

What those who argue do not see is that research and new technology are an investment. An investment is only good, if it produces more than it costs. Thus, no matter hard competition, investments that are profitable will be made. Investments that are not profitable should not be made in any case.

So is there anything that changes? Can a hard competition make some new technologies unprofitable? The only case where it could, is if the new technology had great one time costs and could be easily, fast, and cheaply copied elsewhere. Technological knowledge has these qualities; so might this not mean that competition in fact stifles technological innovation?

Not necessarily. In our current world, patents exist to artificially make it more expensive for others to apply the knowledge you have created. In addition, the company that creates the new knowledge will be the first to market and will enjoy a monopoly power for a short while (which enables it to charge more from those customers that really want the new tech and get the investment costs back).

In addition, hard competition gives those companies the necessary incentives to do things as efficiently as possible. Many people forget that inventivess in business logic and company internal logistics/operations is an important part of what makes a company a success.

Lastly, is it really so that this particular company is the one who should do the innovating and research? Perhaps, for example, broadband companies should leave much of the technological and scientific research to others and concentrate on buying the technology they need from others. On the other hand, they could push for business innovations - new ways of doing old things, or ways of doing new things that customers want. Perhaps in cooperation with some of their more technologically oriented providers.

Thus, competition is not bad for technological innovation and progress. Instead it gives consumers more money to spend on things they want.
The fallacy comes from not understanding why companies spend money on research and new technology.

San Diego - here I come

I'm going. I just can't realize it quite yet. Still I'm feeling almost dizzy. Finally TEKES and TKK and UCSD got to a mutual understanding about intellectual property rights. (It's not signed yet, but they've all agreed its okay).

I feel like celebrating. A glass or two of extremely good whisky should be right about it. But that'll have to wait until evening.

I can't believe that things really worked out. I'm still waiting for that small problem to come and create a problem that will destroy my chances and hopes for it to happen. I guess I won't really believe before I set my feet to the San Diego soil.

Todellinen amerikkalainen sankari on kuollut

Rosa Parks kuoli eilen 92-vuotiaana.

The bus driver shouted, "Aren´t you going to stand up?"

"No," she replied.

"Well, I´m going to have you arrested," he declared.

"You may do that," was Rosa Parks´ calm response.

Sananvapausloukkauksia Suomessa

Kiitos Paulalle virheen huomauttamisesta.

Haluatko kansanedustajaksi?

Tänään kysyn lukijoilta ja muilta blogaajilta "Haluatko kansanedustajaksi?"

Itse olen miettinyt tuota kysymystä viime viikkoina ihan oikeasti.

Toisaalla armas Karpelamme kunnostautui kantamalla piraattituotetta Sloveniassa.

Masinointi-kamppanjalla menee kovaa. Adressiin kerättiin viikossa yli viisi tuhatta allekirjoitusta. Erinomainen saavutus joukolle, joka syntyi vai muutama viikko sitten. Kiitos kaikille adresssin allekirjoittaneille! Opetusministeriö huomioi adressimme aikaistamalla presidentin esittelyn aikataulua. Ponnistuksemme eivät siis menneet hukkaan.

Tanja osaa

Kulttuuriministerimme Tanja Karpela näyttää vahvaa osaamistaan tekijänoikeuskysymyksissä kirjoittamassaan Turun Sanomien pääkirjoituksessa. Lainaan tässä suoraan Tanjan omaa kirjoitusta, jottei kukaan pääsisi syyttämään minua Tanjan sanomisten vääristelystä.

"Pientä "kansalaistottelemattomuutta" olemme harrastaneet muiden pohjoismaiden tavoin.

Uusi viikko, uudet kujeet

Uusi viikko on alkanut.

Töitä on rästissä parin päivän ajalta.

Yhdessä sopimamme tarinan alku sijoittuu Helvetin Koloon (Hell's Sink), pohjoiseen suurkaupunkiin maassa, jota Gramex hallitsee.

On sunnuntai-ilta, viikonloppu on ohi.

Seksi pannaan

Suomessa oikeusministeri Johannes Koskinen pyrkii kieltämään seksin oston viimeisenä tekonaan ennen virastaan poistumista. Turun Sanomilla menee puurot ja vellit sekaisin väittäessään tätä konservatiivia, joka haluaa isoveljen valvomaan ihmisten sänkykamarin toimintaa liberaaliksi.

Tanskanmaalla sen sijaan lähestymistapa on toisenlainen. Valtio kustantaa pornoa ja seksipalveluita vanhuksille ja vammaisille. Asiasta raportoi Phil Finland for Thought -blogissa.

Vapaasana kirjoittaa aiheesta pidemmin.

Oma kantani on se, ettei valtion tule puuttua ihmisten väliseen vapaaehtoiseen kanssakäymiseen.

San Diego - update

Things have been going on between yes, this is going to happen! and I'll never be going to San Diego! for quite a while. Just last week I was finally convinced that things would be moving forwards and now I'm back to this is not going to happen mood, because of some developments I just heard today. Things requiring lawyers on I won't say anything more about the problem, just this: Problems which require several parties (in my case at least 6) to agree on a legally binding contract are desperately tricky.

Home, sweet home!

I just got back home last night after spending a week in Italy. It was fun, I learned some interesting things (I was there attending a summer school, so it was a kind of a business trip) and totally exhausting. 8-10 hours of lectures every day and then lots and lots of food and alcohol on top of that with strange people. They were fun, I had fun, but it's good to be home. Exhausting.

I'll continue with my views on the new proposed budget for the Finnish government later, when I have time and feel refreshed enough.

Valtion talousarvio

Valtion talousarvion 2006 ehdotuksen kokonaissumma on 39,375 miljardia euroa. Viime vuoden budjetin kokonaissumma oli 37,9 miljardia euroa. Kasvua tähän vuoteen on siis noin 3,9% viime vuoteen nähden.

Totuus on kuitenkin erilainen.

Lahjontaskandaali Suomessa!

Suomen maassa on jotain mätää.

George W Bush

This time he's done something right. I wish he'd continue his speech with action and pressured the protectionist EU politicians to get rid of protectionist policies.

"Today, I reiterate the challenge I have made before: We must work together in the Doha negotiations to eliminate agricultural subsidies that distort trade and stunt development, and to eliminate tariffs and other barriers to open markets for farmers around the world. Today I broaden the challenge by making this pledge: The United States is ready to eliminate all tariffs, subsidies and other barriers to free flow of goods and services as other nations do the same. This is key to overcoming poverty in the world´s poorest nations."

I hope that something good will come out of this, but won't hold my breath waiting.

Meat for lab

Do not miss your future chance to buy lab grown food!

It seems that at first it'll be chicken that you'll get out of a lab, but eventually it should replace the mass production of meat using animals. It'll be interesting to see how law makers respond to this - and even more so to see how people producing meat in the thousands of years old way, will respond. Might it be that we could make the old industry irrelevant and possibly even get rid of their unhealty political influence?

Time will tell.

Problems

Problem, problems, problems. Big problems, small problems. Problems swollen with emotion, problems picking intellectual interest. Entertaining problems; problems hard to let go. Annoying problems, uplifting problems.

The word problem has a negative tone to many. As a person whose career is about dealing with problems (whose isn't?), I have hard time understanding why. Problems are meant to be solved, they raise our curiosity and pick our interest. Some do that in an uplifting way, some problems are/seem so important and urgent that we cannot feel good until they are solved. And solving a problem feels good.

In essence solving problems is mainly about solving problems and is fun by itself. As a side effect, it tends to make our lives better, which is good.

Breaking the law

Today I consider becoming a law breaker. To be precise, whether I will, or not, still depends on the Parliament of Finland. They will be voting on the copyright law proposal by the government found here. If it passes, it will for forbid people from copying material that is copy protected. This makes making a safety copy of a movie you own illegal.

The law would also make distributing means to break copy protection illegal - one of the consequences of this would be to make watching dvds in Linux illegal.

Jyrki J.J. Kasvi, the MP who has fought against the law, also says that it would make transferring software or databases over the Internet illegal. Knowing him as an honest politician I believe him even though I have not read through the proposal.

Reading it through is a little bit too much, considering that the text is a whopping 200 pages. I wonder how many MPs have read the document and how many will just vote yes, because their party tells them to. If you want to do something, do that NOW. Contact your MP and tell him what you think about him, if he votes for the law.

The plan to break the law, would be to distribute linux libdvdcss (distributing, or using it to view copyrighted and copyprotected dvd, will be illegal, if the law passes) and also to watch a movie using the same libdvdcss. The best way to do this would be to have as many people as possible doing it on the very same day and then going to the police to give themselves in.

New Orleans

(Warning, this entry contains macabre humor, which may insult people who are from New Orleans or know people from New Orleans. Still I do not mean it to be insulting, so hopefully you will not take it that way either.)

I was reading this when I suddenly had an idea. Certainly it is a roleplayers idea with a certain macabre sense of humor - and probably a bad idea at that.

Let's just leave New Orleans there. Evacuate everyone who wants to leave and anything considered valuable enough and then set up a wall around it. Let those who want to roam and rape and pillage stay there and have their life the way they like it.

At least we'd have the first mad max style western city where no law nor anything else of a civilized society existed - a heaven for all would be roleplayers to study and to take ideas from. A source of endless amount of movies and songs and the like. Young rebellous people could travel there with their guns and be tourists in a lawless city.

A dream come true for anarchists and anarchocapitalists alike.

Venäjä on päättänyt suuressa viisaudessaan lakkauttaa monien ulkomaalaisten toimittajien viisumit. Ehkäpä se opettaa pahoille länsimaille, kuinka Venäjää pitää kohdella.

Yllättäen kaikki Venäjältä 'karkoitetut' toimittajat ovat olleet kriittisiä Tshetshenian sotaa kohtaan. Onneksi en ole lähdössä Venäjälle. Voisivat vaikka evätä minunkin viisumini, olenhan itsekin arvostellut sotaa kovin sanankääntein julkisesti ja yksityisesti.

Kiinalaisia vaatteita

Tästä ansiosta Global Growth nimittikin Mandelsonin kuukauden protektionistiksi.

Nigerissä on käynnissä nälänhätä. Tästä kertoo mm. Washington Post, CNN, Worldbank ja monet muut. Globalisaatioinstituutilla on mielenkiintoinen ehdotus ongelman ratkaisemiseksi.

It seems that there is in fact no shortage of food in Niger. It's shortage of money that is the problem. Because of bad harvest last year and because of European Union's agricultural policies, the

Kaavoituksesta

Rakentamisen vähyyteen on monta syytä.

Mystery

I just finished watching "The Farm" the episode 205 of tv series Battlestar Galactica, the latest to have come out. I watched the first season last spring and was hooked, right from the beginning.

I loved Galactica when I was a kid. We used to watch it with my older brother and then make fighters and ships from legos and play at being Galactica. Still I don't think I want to see the old series again. It's too 70s for me. Too, how would I put it, naive, in its own way. And I don't say that meaning anything bad, it was a great show but for me it's history. I really like the new one and what they've done with it.

But I was not going to write about the old Galactica. Instead, I just remember to say that this Galactica is the only tv show I currently have any patience at following. I watched and liked Carnevale while it lasted - I heard that there's not going to be a third season, though I'm not sure. I tried Deadwood. Watched it like 4-5 episodes and didn't like it. Something was missing there that little something that makes you wait for the next episode and want to watch the next and then the next and so on.

I never really got into Star Trek. They (all the different series in the universe) are too naive and 70s for me as well. I did like babylon five tremendously. I'm sad that Firefly didn't take off as a series at first try; I loved it. Hope the movie makes a gazillion dollars and they get the series restarted.

The thing that is common in Galactica, Babylon 5 and Firefly - at least - is that they inspire this great feeling of mystery. That there is so much more in the universe that is waiting to be found out. And that you wish to find out all the things the series will tell you. They are quite different things in each of the series above.

This feeling of mystery is something I look for and crave for in a tv-series, in a movie, in a book, in a comic book. I guess that's the main reason why I've read so much fantasy and still sometimes do. Though nowadays I need to find fantasy from the fringe, something different, something new. Because the old stories of knights in their shining armors, wizards chanting their spells, and barbarians raising their battle axes and boozing off, no longer create that mystery.

Mystery, perhaps I should re-name the title of this post originally named Battlestar Galactica (how original).

Moral Philosophy

Some of you may already know that moral philosophy is one of my hobbies. Currently I find a rule based utilitarianism quite attractive for several reasons.

About a month ago I had a short discussion with a friend of mine about contraception. To be precise, we talked about who should pay for them and how the cost should be divided when two people are in a relationship. She thought that the right division would be fifty-fifty. I agreed that it sounds like a rational choice, but that there are some considerations that might suggest a greater share for the man.

I had already passed from discussion of what I believe to be right into trying to understand the thought I had just had at that moment and trying to find out whether it was right or not. I had also in my mind jumped from the specific the pills scenario to a general scenario in a relationship where the other party needs to constantly do something for the relationship that might cause harm, or pain, or any other thing usually considered negative.

As my friends may have found out, I am usually more interested in talking about things I am not sure about than those that I've already tested for many and many times. The reason is that I think by talking. Active criticism and new ideas while talking create new ideas within me and my mind races through them finding lots and lots of interesting things.

But back to the problem at hand. My first idea was that if the other person does somehow suffer from doing the thing for the relationship, he should be compensated for that and that the compensation could be such that the other person pays more of the monetary cost.

My friend, of course, was appalled, not quite understanding that I had jumped from the world of actuals to the world of hypotheticals. [Mental note: Remember to try to make the jump from actuals to hypotheticals more clear to conversation participants.] She said she will not be a victim and also mentioned that nowadays there are no such bad consequences from using pills, at least if you find the right pills for yourself (so maybe pills are a bad example for what I was thinking about). Our discussion abruptly ended and I got back to thinking about it in the evening and had a long discussion with another friend of mine.

From simple utilitarian perspective it would seem that it is fair that the other person compensates the negative things the other one has to go through. The simplest way of compensating this kind of thing would be to shift the monetary burden the other way around. But for some reason this idea was appalling to the person next to me. And since I had a vague feeling that there's something right that it does I wanted to find out what's going on.

From my perspective, it comes down to incentives. Now this is surely not the only avenue to look at this, but its the one easiest and closest to my heart. The rule based utilitarianism states that we should have moral rules that create incentives for people to do right. In a family, we want to maximise the well being of the whole family and secondarily to be fair in how the well being is distributed. If we want to be able to make good decisions about how to make the family happy, we need to know truthfully what people feel about different issues.

So we need a truth revealing mechanism as part of the moral rule set, i.e. everybody should have an incentive of telling truthfully how they feel about things. (This idea is one of the reasons why I'm not monogamous, but that's a topic for another post.) To see why this is important, we only need to look at some specific situation with several options. If people truthfully tell what they want we are in much better position to start searching for the best possible solution than if the attitude of each person is to try to push the solution to their current most preferred solution. The other one creates a starting point, where the couple can start searching for a good answer and the other a situation where they struggle for power.

Now the problem of compensating another person from their internal suffering is that it breaks the truth revealing principle. It creates an incentive to lie. We people are not that noble animals that we are never tempted to do something that makes us better off at the expense of others. So we should not adopt a principle, where the man pays more for the the pills, if the woman suffers from taking them (again just a hypothetical).

Now that we've ruled this kind of solution out, we can next ask what should we do? First of all, I would state that I don't think 50/50 splitting of the cost is the only right answer. Rather the right answer is something both are truly happy with and in some cases it might be the woman paying everything and in some cases the man paying everything or something in between (for example, if the other person was poor enough not to be able to afford them at all, it would make sense for a rich person to pay more of them, perhaps even all of it. After all, the rich person would profit more from them having those pills than them not having them).

Then to continue, if indeed there was a situation where the other person was constantly doing something that caused him suffering and this was something needed for the relationship, what should they do?

My thoughts on this are far from finished, but at least they should search for solutions that did not require the suffering. Possibly the other person should take into account the suffering the other person was going through, but how exactly, I do not yet know. Whenever possible, I would strive for the option of getting rid of the suffering, though.

(non-)Monogamy

Irrette wrote in her blog about being single and referred to a bunch of posts she had written previously about not being monogamous. I was surprised that there were people in my circles who had so similar ideas to relationships as I do. I read through all those four old posts of Irre and for most parts they could have been written by me.

I found the idea of non-monogamy a couple of years back and it hit me like a thousand volts. I've never liked the idea of requiring things from others, especially in close relationships. Now at this point of writing, I have a feeling that many people read that as me not wanting to give others what they want. Nothing could be further from the truth. I feel less comfortable instisting on something from other people than doing something on behalf of others. Actually that is too mildly put. I don't do that in relationships. Period. And I want to make people around me happy.

Which takes us back to monogamy at the heart of which from my point of view is the requirement for the other party not to have certain kinds of fun with anybody else. It's an idea I just don't understand. If I have a good relationship with another person, it doesn't really matter what she does when I'm around (as long as she doesn't put me at risk of disease, or whatnot). Or to be more precise, the more fulfilling her life is in the other sphere's of life, the better. Some people also seem to think that not being monogamous means that you just want to go around having one night stands and don't want to have a relationship. In my case the truth is quite the opposite. Now what I want from a relationship is something large enough that it deserves its own post some time later. I could also go on and talk about stupidity of jealousy, and all other things, but I'll leave them for later.

London bombings

The post edited on August 12th. Thanks to Ronja for comments.

Many of you may already know that I was on a bus going to London at the time of the first London bombings on July 7th. I'm writing this entry partly because of a request from a colleague who is doing research on mobile emergency announcement systems and sensemaking in connection to emergencies.

I woke up in Oxford around 7AM eager to get an early start to London. I had come there on Tuesday to meet a friend and would spend Thursday in London shopping for clothes. My plane was to leave Heathrow 10.20AM on Friday, so I would only have Thursday for shopping. So it was important for me to get there early. I also had a lunch meeting arranged with a libertarian friend of mine on the other side of London at 1PM.

Alas, my trip had a bad start from the beginning. Another guest spent at least a half an hour in the shower, which delayed me considerably. Still I got on a bus and was merrily getting to London, when my sister called me on my cell phone to ask if I was okay. The time of call was probably 9.15 or so. I could not check the time afterwards, because my Nokia Series 60 phone only retains time of call for each caller's newest call (and since my sister had called again later I could not check the exact time anymore). She could still reach me (probably) because I was only approaching London at the time. She told me that there had been explosions, at least two, in the subway system, and that it was not yet known if it was terrorism, or something else. I told about this to the passenger next to me, who was going to an exam and became quite worried. When I got up and went downstairs to ready myself for getting off, I talked about the situation with two other passengers who had heard of it and that it was only a glitch in the electric system and no terrorist attack was involved.

My hostel was at Shepherd's Bush and I stepped out of the Oxford express at Notting Hill Gate stop. (I noticed later that I should have stepped out one stop earlier, but I didn't care about that so much before, since Notting Hill should be an easy place to get off at and I should be able to use subway anyway. I could not really concieve of a situation where the whole subway system would be offline.) I walked to the subway station entrance and saw that it was closed. Lots of men dressed in the subway neon colors at the entrance talking to people. I waited around for a while (perhaps 5-10 minutes) to get to one of them and asked what was going on. They told me that bombs had detonated in the subway and that the whole subway system was closed, as well as all bus traffic in Zone 1. I asked them directions for Shepherd's Bush and started walking.

Got to the hostel, which was pretty easy to find, around 10AM. Put my stuff into a locked backroom, since check-in was only after 2PM (or something like that). Received some text messages from friends who were worried, perhaps during the walk or after I got to the hostel. I spent some time talking and asked the personnel to put the Tv on to follow the news about the bombings. It seemed they hadn't even heard the news. I tried to call friends, but could not connect to the network. I tried to send SMSs but sending failed. Then I took a look at the nearby shopping mall to see if anything interesting was there.

When I got back to the hostel, I found that there was an Internet terminal at the hostel and I logged on. Then I logged into my universitys webmail site and sent an email to a friend and told him that I would appreciate getting news via SMS, if and when new information was available. Through the day, he sent me 6 messages telling the most important developments (including the critical information that Heathrow Express was not running). Then I started thinking about contacting other friends. I knew there were some irc clients that can be used through web and googled for web irc. So I found cgi-irc, which was amazingly simple to use (just give a nick and a channel you want to join and you're ready to go); I joined some channels which I use for keeping in touch with friends and told them "Yes, I am in London and yes, I am okay". I also asked them to spread the information around.

To be truthful, I was amazed by how many people knew that I was in London and how many people were worried about me. Somehow I didn't think they'd remember, or care. Sometimes it is good to be positively surprised by your friends. (Of course, knowing my friends I shouldn't have been but, there it is, I was). I wasn't really afraid for my own safety. I had arrived in London almost an hour after the bombings and thought it quite unlikely that there would be more attacks during the day. I was anxious to get a message through to my friends, though. Luckily my sister had reached me, so I was confident that she'd let my family know that I was alright. I felt bad that my friends might be wondering if I was okay (especially since they wouldn't be able to get any calls through to me to check). So I was intensely relieved to find that computer.

From here on, my memories on the order of things starts to get blurred. So I'll first tell you what I did during the day and then try to parse the different rumors I heard and to remember how I tried to make sense of what was happening.

The day was approaching noon and I decided not to abandon my shopping for such a little thing as these bombings.
So I walked to Notting Hill Gate and went to eat in an Italian restaurant (which had really nice food). Then I went to nearby shops to find some clothes. When I didn't find anything interesting, I decided to continue to Oxford Street - walking this time. Soon it started to rain and I stopped into a bookshop for a while to pass the time. I just love bookshops, so that was okay (though I'd already passed my credit limit for books in Oxford). Continued the walk, which took longer than I had expected and finally got to Oxford Street. I went around shopping, most shops were open. I bought some clothes and decided to take a bus back. It was perhaps three or four o'clock in the afternoon.

At one point, while I was traveling in the bus, I suddenly started thinking of the possibility that one of the other passengers was a terrorist with a bomb. It was quite interesting to observe my reactions to this idea. I saw in myself the possibility for a panic should I let myself continue thinking about it. So, instead, I told myself not to feel it and limit thinking of it into the rational part of my brain, which assured the other parts of my mind that the likelyhood of a terrorist to be on this bus is vanishingly small - and then proceeded to make myself feel a little better by checking out the other passengers and making sure I'd notice, if anybody did anything suspicious.

It was a revelation for me that I could actually be so close to such a primal reaction and I knew had I succumbed to it that I could not have regained my self control easily. Still, I did not succumb for which I am extremely glad. I think I may have to use this idea in my roleplaying hobby in some way or another. Perhaps the will checks used in some games do have some merit after all. It will also allow me to understand those who do fall into that primal reaction a little better. That reaction, the place I could have gotten into, was probably the most scary thing that I encountered during that day in London.

Throughout the day, there were several different rumors flying around. Many people had heard that there had been 6 bombs, at one point people even talked about 9 bombs out of which only 6 had gone off. Then the news started talking about 4 bombs and nobody mentioned those others. There was a girl who told that they had been evacuated from their home by police officers who said there was a bomb on the street (if I recall correctly she referred to a trash can). I have a vague recollection that even in the news, they would have spoked of some bomb that they found before it exploded, but my memory may well fail on this.

All in all, many people had the feeling that the government was not telling everything - that they are hiding something. I heard many people saying similar things at the pub next to the hostel, at McDonalds, at the hostel, etc. I heard comments like: "They are hiding something." "They haven't mentioned anything about this thing I heard about, they are hiding something." "There's something going on that they are not telling us." And so on.

Now I can think of several rational explanations for these rumors and why they were not addressed by the government officials. Firstly, they might want to withhold some information which only the police and those responsible could know. This might be useful information to help determine the guilt of future suspects. Secondly, the police might not actually have said that they found a bomb on the street. He might have said (or meant to say) that they suspected a bomb on the street. Or perhaps he did say there was a bomb, because they suspected such, and he really wanted to stress the importance of people leaving the area. Or perhaps the girl had heard it from another person leaving the area or just remembered things wrong.

Whatever the reason for these rumors, there are things that the rescue workers, police, etc. could have done better. For example, if there were places were police did search for hidden bombs and informed some local people of it, they should publish that they did so and whether they found anything (note that currently they mostly seem to tell, if they found things and not so much when they didn't find things. It's the latter kind of situation that creates the feeling of somebody withholding information).

So to enhance emergency communications, all the information that the rescue workers, police, firemen, etc. pass to the public, everything they do should be automatically collected, processed and then as good a report as possible of things done should be published (remembering that some things may have to be withheld, because you might not want the terrorists to know everything about how the emergency organization works). This could be achieved for example if each rescue worker carried a recording device with gps and radio for network connection. It would automatically track and save the movements of the rescue worker. Whenever the worker would start to do something new, he would make a short comment to the recording about what he is about to do. So for example, if he was to evacuate an area because of a possible bomb finding, he would state that he starts to evacuate people because of a possible bomb finding.

In the evening I started thinking about getting to the airport in the morning. I realized that the subway was not working yet and might not be in the morning. I also found out that no busses I could use were going there either. I talked with the subway guard who said that the subway system might be operational in the morning and if it was, it would open (I don't remember whether it was) 5.30am or 6am. So I got up early, a little bit after 5am, got some breakfast from a grocerie store nearby (how I love a country that allows shops to be open at such times). Got into the subway and asked the helping people there how I could get to Heathrow. Some lines weren't operational yet, so he advised me to get the Central to Notting Hill Gate, then District south to Earl's Court and then continue with Piccadilly to Heathrow.

I got on the Central, got off at Notting Hill Gate and found out that neither District, nor Central were running (though the information desks and the subway info worker at Shepherd's Bush told differently). I asked the workers what I should do and they told me to take a bus to some other station from where I could continue with Piccadilly to Heathrow. I don't remember exactly which it was but I think it might have been Turnham Green.

Unfortunately, I got to the right bus, but it went the wrong way. I was on the right bus stop, but didn't realize that both directions used by the one and the same bus stop. I asked about my destination from the driver who told me I was in the wrong bus perhaps after 10 minutes drive. I got off, and found the correct bus. I finally got to Piccadilly line and found myself in Heathrow airport around 8AM.

The crowd at the Heathrow airport was something I never saw in my life before (at any other airport). The queues for check-in weren't so bad. Perhaps 30-50 meters long. I checked in and went to the security check line. The line was so long that it filled the approach area, got to the check-in hall, where it split in two. Each of the lines then continued to the other end of the hall, then across and then the queues almost met in the middle of the hall on the other side. I was sure I'd be in a hurry and not have time to buy whisky in the terminal since it was already past eight o'clock.

I am still amazed at how well things worked there. It took me 45 minutes to queue and get through the security checks. And during that time, the airport workers were constantly going through the queue to find people with flights leaving soon (under 45 minutes) and getting them to a special fast line. So I got to the shopping area in time for shopping a bag full of whisky and eat a little something, before going to the gate. There I got to be one of those who went through the security checks again before getting to the gate. I wonder if the security guys near the gate were even a little bit amazed by my hand luggage when they saw my bag. I have this 2-wheeled bag and I had squeezed 6 bottles of whisky in it. It also dawned on me that whisky bottles are probably rather good weapons for terrorists in aeroplanes. At least a lot better than nail clippers. You can break the glass bottle (which gives you a weapon) and you might be able to use the alcohol as a weapon too (e.g. burning it).

Then I got back to Helsinki-Vantaa airport, where I got my luggage and heard part of an announcement. I didn't hear all of it, but I deduced that there was some kind of catastrophe aid/council for people coming from London. Looking around I saw some tables/chairs behind a screen next to the go out door. I went out and stumbled on a friend who was working there as a catastrophy helper/councellor, or something like that. I talked with her for a while and gave some comments to her supervisor and then started home. I was tired, so tired when I got back home.

So many people dead in such a horrible way. The bombings were a tragedy and I feel sad for all those who lost friends or relatives. And angry at those terrorists. I was amazed at how calmly people of London took the situation and continued their lives.
